‘Not genuine Vermeers’? Art historian casts doubt on the authenticity of two masterpieces

Art historian Adriaan Waiboer is convinced that two paintings attributed to the Delft painter Johannes Vermeer cannot be by the master himself. The works in question are ‘The Love Letter’ (Rijksmuseum Amsterdam) and ‘The Wine Glass’ (Gemäldegalerie Berlin).

Waiboer has not reached these conclusions lightly. Two years elapsed between the start of his research and the publication of his findings in the academic journal *Journal of Historians of Netherlandish Art*. If Waiboer’s findings are correct, this will reduce Vermeer’s already modest body of work by a further two pieces.

As former Head of Collections and Research at the National Gallery of Ireland in Dublin, Waiboer wrote his PhD thesis on the paintings of Gabriël Metsu, a contemporary of Vermeer. In 2017, he curated, amongst other things, the exhibition ‘Vermeer and the Masters of Genre Painting’ in Dublin, which also featured the work *The Love Letter*.

This research forms part of Adriaan Waiboer’s forthcoming book on Johannes Vermeer.
