Profile of the Vermeer Centrum Delft
The name Johannes Vermeer is inextricably connected to Delft, the town where he was born in 1632. The Vermeer Centrum Delft, with more than 40.000 visitors a year, is now located on the spot where he frequently visited the St. Lucas Guild, the association of painters and artists.
Visual discovery trip
At the unique Vermeer Centrum Delft visitors go on a visual discovery trip through the life, works and town of the 17th century master. A visit starts in the basement, where reproductions of all works can be seen in chronological order. The first floor is furnished as a studio where visitors discover Vermeer’s way of working and how he played with light, composition and colour. Many of Vermeer’s paintings are about love. On the second floor the exhibition ‘Vermeer’s love messages’ shows you which love symbols the painter incorporated into his paintings.
All works together
Vermeer made about 50 paintings, several were lost. His currently known works consist of 37 paintings. Three paintings are in The Hague in the Mauritshuis; four are in Amsterdams in the Rijksmuseum. The Vermeer Centrum Delft is unique because it is the only ‘museum’ in the world that has all the reproductions of his works in real life-size together in one place.
Education plays an important role in the Vermeer Centrum Delft. There are guided tours in four different languages. A guided tour will take about 1 hour. Every Friday at 2:00 pm and Sunday at 12 pm there is a free Dutch guided tour. And on Sunday at 10:30 am there is a free English guided tour.
For children up to about 12 years there are special puzzle tours available. On the website www.vermeerdelft.nl there is information available for school talks.
